French Woman Defrauded by Fake Brad Pitt in Romance Scam

A 53-year-old French interior designer named Anne was swindled out of €830,000 ($850,000) in a romance scam involving someone impersonating Brad Pitt. Using AI-generated images and elaborate stories, the scammer exploited Anne’s trust and emotions over several months.

How It Happened

The scam began in February 2023 when Anne received Instagram messages from accounts posing as Pitt’s mother and later Pitt himself. The scammer, avoiding calls or video chats, used charm and convincing AI-generated photos, including one of “Pitt” in a hospital bed. They fabricated stories of financial trouble, promising marriage and luxury gifts.

Anne, already going through a divorce, sent money to cover fake customs fees and medical bills for alleged kidney cancer. By mid-2024, after losing nearly €1 million, Anne realized the truth when news of Pitt’s real relationship surfaced.

Impact and Awareness

Devastated, Anne reported the fraud to police and was hospitalized for depression. Her case highlights the dangers of romance scams, which prey on lonely or vulnerable individuals. Experts urge public awareness to prevent these increasingly sophisticated crimes.
